HECTOR JOAQUIN'S NOTES #4 - Miss Universe 2011 Sao Paulo!

"...she is also unpretentious and easy to talk to."

About the candidates, let's talk about those who are turning lots of heads:

ALBANIA : Xhesika Berberi has an angelical and photogenic face but her only problem is her short stature. She comes from the Fadil Berisha "school" of modeling and she's a girl to watch during the prelims. She is always well-dressed and is always seen with Miss Kosovo.

FINLAND : Pia Pakarinen (photo, left) has to be seen up close to notice that she has one of the most beautiful in the competition. Pia is a very sweet girl and her natural beauty reminds me a lot of Jennifer Hawkins who won Miss Universe in 2004. It's obvious that she is not Hawkins, but she does shine and can easily place in the semifinals.

GHANA : Erica Nego was Miss Minnesota 2009 and was a semifinalist in Miss USA of the same year and competed with Anastagia Pierre (Miss Bahamas Universe 2011) who was Miss Florida USA 2009. Erica stands out both in her personality and intelligenve. I liked her better when she competed in Miss USA, but she's one of those girls who can pull a surprise during the prelims. I met her in Fadil Berisha's studio and I detected a very confident Erica who is very determined to make Ghana place in the semifinals.

ISRAEL : Kim Edry is simply beautiful in all angles. She is enjoying the pageant like no one has and is always accessible. She always looks fresh, natural and very young.

KOSOVO : Aferdita Dreshaj (photo, right) may confound some people, but you really have to see her in person to realize that she is a beautiful, sensual and charismatic young woman. Aferdita was born in New York, but was raised by an Albanian-American family in Michigan. Her family is originally from Montenegro who moved to Kosovo. She launched her debut album "Just Kiss Me" which was a huge success in Albania and Kosovo. I think she has secured herself a finalist spot.

MALAYSIA : If there is a delegate who possesses the most elegance, it has to be Deborah Henry. Deborah is very intelligent, and when you see her you are instantly enamored by her enigmativ beauty and class that very few girls have. She's always well-dressed and well-styled, and she comes prepared to win the crown. She came to So Paulo not to waste any time. Deborah was a semifinalist in Miss World 2007 and she will certainly duplicate that feat in Miss Universe 2011.

NICARAGUA : If there is one candidate that has surprised me the most, it would have to be Adriana Dorn (photo, left). Adriana possesses a fabulous figure and great communication skills. She is also unpretentious and is easy to talk to. When I first saw her, I told her that she looked much prettier in person than in photos; when she asked me if this was an advantage or disadvantage, I replied that people are accustomed to see photos of the girls and they expect that these photos to be one form or another, but in Adriana's case it was the opposite; she shines both in person and in photos. Of the Central American delegates, she is undoubtedly the strongest and I can see her placing in the semifinals.

PANAMA : My dear Sheldry Saez. When I wrote in my blog that she would win Miss Panama, I received angry e-mails from Sheldry's detractors who couldn't accept the possiblity that she could win. But Sheldry was the best girl in the national pageant because she had the X-Factor that the others didn't have. Sheldry's look is quite unique; her lips have been compared to those of actress Angelina Jolie, and she is just oozing with sex appeal. She's charismatic and she expresses herself very well. Her hair is also thick and gorgeous. However, I think she needs to outline well what her strategy is going to be to reach the semifinals, because the least error could eliminate her from the competition. I really love this girl and I want to see her reach the semifinals.

PARAGUAY : Alba Riquelme has one of the fiercest bodies in the competition. She has a spectacular catwalk, a lustrous hair worthy to appear in a shampoo commercial, and a great attitude. She has everything to win, but of course it will depend on her performance during the prelims. Along with Venezuela, she is one of the strongest competitors from South America.

SWEDEN : Ronia Fornstedt is tall, fit, beautiful and elegant young woman. She definitely turns a lot of heads! I am curious to see her performance during the preliminaries.

SWITZERLAND : Kerstin Cook has also one of the most beautiful faces in the competition and possesses all the qualities that could win her the crown. But she falls short in her selection of evening gown, like most of the European candidates.

TRINIDAD & TOBAGO : i met Gabrielle Walcott (photo, right) for the first time in South Africa when she competed in Miss World 2008. One of her best attributes is her intelligence. She is beautiful, sensual, classy, well-educated, and carries herself very well. She's always well-dressed and very approachable. When you talk to her, you're hypnotized by her accent and her manner of speaking. If she plays her cards right, she can easily gain a finalist spot.
